What the Deanship Enables
A lasting investment in medical education and health equity
The Kolokotrones Deanship will support the continued growth and impact of UGHE’s School of Medicine, deepening its commitment to excellence in medical education, leadership development, and community-based training. The School’s innovative dual degree MBBS–MGHD (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and Master of Science in Global Health Delivery) program integrates clinical training with delivery science, social medicine, and immersive learning in rural settings, preparing clinicians to transform health systems in Rwanda and beyond.
Why Kolokotrones?
Honoring a legacy of rigorous, equity-driven global health
The deanship honors the legacy of Dr. Paul Farmer, who served as the first Kolokotrones University Professor of Global Health at Harvard University. Dr. Farmer, co-founder of Partners In Health, dedicated his life to advancing high-quality health care for the most vulnerable through compassionate accompaniment, scientific rigor, and an unwavering belief that health is a human right.
At Harvard University, Dr. Farmer was appointed as the first incumbent to the Kolokotrones University Professorship, established through a gift from Wendy and Theo Kolokotrones (December 2010).
About Theo and Wendy Kolokotrones
The Kolokotrones Deanship also aligns with the family’s belief in the importance of education at all levels, including basic literacy and numeracy as tools that safeguard dignity and build opportunity for children and communities. Their commitment reflects UGHE’s long-term vision to support not only the training of health professionals, but the broader educational ecosystem in Butaro.
