University Medalists

UGHE is proud to celebrate exceptional individuals whose lives and service reflect the values at the heart of the university. These medalists have strengthened communities, advanced equity, and embodied the spirit of solidarity, care, and commitment that UGHE holds dear.

2026

Bill and Joyce Cummings

The Paul E Farmer Bending the Arc Award

Early 2026, UGHE honoured Bill and Joyce Cummings with The Paul E. Farmer Bending the Arc Award. In 2025, the Board of Directors named the University medal in memory of its founder, creating an award that recognises people whose lives and work have made significant contributions to health equity and social justice. The award reflects the belief that progress towards justice requires persistence, solidarity, and partnership with local communities.

UGHE recognised Bill and Joyce Cummings for a lifetime of philanthropy rooted in that very spirit. Through the Cummings Foundation, which they established in 1986, they have supported organisations working to strengthen local communities and have created an innovative model of giving through their commitment to “all profits to nonprofits.” Their foundation now donates $50 million each year and has given more than $600 million since its inception.

UGHE also honoured Bill and Joyce for their commitment to education and community impact, both in Boston and in Rwanda. Their support has reached many important institutions, including UGHE, which they helped found, as well as the Paul Farmer Collaborative that supports collaboration between Harvard Medical School and UGHE. In awarding them this medal, UGHE recognised not only their generosity, but also their enduring belief that meaningful change is built through shared purpose and long-term commitment.

2024

UGHE also recognised Mr. Ndabarasa for the deep relationships he has built over the years. Beyond his official responsibilities, he became a trusted and valued presence in the community, including through a cherished friendship with the late Paul Farmer. His loyalty and commitment to the principles of accompaniment made him a deserving recipient of this special recognition.

Mr. Jean Baptiste Maniragaba

UGHE Medal

In 2024, UGHE awarded Mr. Jean Baptiste Maniragaba the UGHE Medal in honour of his invaluable contributions and unwavering commitment to the university and PIH. As senior gardener, he has devoted himself to shaping the beauty, calm, and sense of welcome that define the campus environment.
