This is a transformative two-year, full-time, competency-based program designed to elevate nurses and midwives to lead meaningful change within the global healthcare landscape. The innovative curriculum combines 60% online learning with 40% in-person engagement, offering a flexible and dynamic structure tailored to the demanding realities of healthcare professionals. The Practicum module integrates contemporary leadership theory with hands-on experience in global health leadership, allowing immersion in the intricacies of local and international policy, governance, regulation, association and practice leadership.  The practicum concludes with a field school in Rwanda’s vibrant healthcare landscape, providing the essential tools, networks, and credibility to shape the future of global health and foster a legacy of global health equity.

FAQs

When do applications for the MGNL open?

Applications for the MGNL Class of 2028 will open from 9 February  2026 to 26 April 2026 at 23:59 PM CAT. 

What are the requirements for admission?

UGHE’s Office of Admissions takes a holistic approach to the admissions process. The Nursing Academic Council and the MGNL Admissions Committee consider a broad range of application criteria, including supplemental documents, professional experience, screening exams, interviews, and overall alignment with the UGHE’s mission and vision.    

Admission to the Master’s in Global Nursing Leadership requires the student to meet the minimum admission requirements for graduate study at the University of Global Health Equity and the following program-specific requirements:  

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited institution of higher learning 
  • Registered Nurse/Midwife or its equivalent and licensed by a relevant, recognised Nursing and/or Midwifery Council or Board. 
  • A minimum of five years’ work experience in a nursing environment. 
  • Also considered will be: 
  1. A stated interest in interactive, active experiential learning 
  1. A demonstration of values and experience consistent with the philosophy of the University of Global Health Equity 
  1. Proficiency in spoken and written English to enable the student to both comprehend learning material and to engage in verbal and written communication at the graduate level. 
  1. Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. 
  • Priority will be given to students who have demonstrated: 
  1. Leadership experience 
  1. Strong communication skills in spoken and written English 
  1. Success in learning

What is the admissions process?

If my transcripts and diplomas are not in English, do I need to get them translated?

Yes. If your diplomas and transcripts are not in English, you must submit notarised translated copies along with original documents. All transcripts and diplomas will be verified by the relevant authorities.    

If I am accepted into the MGNL Class of 2028 but choose not to attend, can I defer my acceptance to a future class?

Securing a spot in the MGNL Class of 2028 is a significant accomplishment. If you choose to decline your offer, please note that reapplication is required for reconsideration and acceptance is not assured We encourage applicants to carefully evaluate their commitment to the MGNL programtaking this information into consideration. 

How do you assure transparency?

How to apply for a HEC equivalency certificate?

All students who have completed their studies at an international institution in Rwanda or hold foreign qualifications are required to apply for an equivalency certificate from the Higher Education Council (HEC) of Rwanda to be eligible for the MGNL program. Please refer to this video and link for application instructions.   

How much does MGNL cost?

Admitted students receive a 100% tuition waiver by signing a letter of commitment to the program. Non-compliance with the agreement will necessitate a full repayment of the awarded scholarship.  

What is included in my tuition?

The University will only pay for tuition, housing and meals at the UGHE campus, shuttle services between Kigali Heights and UGHE’s Butaro campus and academic-related costs including field trips in Rwanda.  

Additional expenses

Sixty percent (60%) of the MGNL program will be delivered through online learning, requiring students to have access to reliable computers and high-speed internet connectivity. During the practicum and certain stages of the dissertation modules, students will be expected to report to the UGHE campus. Specific dates for these activities will be communicated in the admission letter. Additionally, students should bring their own personal items and toiletries, as UGHE does not provide stipends, allowances, or pocket money. 

Students are expected to cover all expenses incurred outside of UGHE’s Butaro campus, including, but not limited to, visa application fees, international airfare to and from Rwanda, accommodation, and meals.
