Applications for the MGHD Program, Class of 2027, under the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program will follow the schedule outlined below.

Admission Criteria
The following four MGHD Options: *This is for applicants eligible for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program:
- Global Surgery,
- Health Management,
- One Health and
- Social and Community Medicine.
- Applicants must be 35 or under the year at the time of application (exceptions apply to applicants with disabilities).
- Applicants must be residents and citizens or hold refugee status in an African country.
- Applicants should have matriculated and successfully graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from any diverse academic and professional background. *Official academic transcript/s and degree certificate should be attached as proof of completion.
- The MGHD program seeks to attract a diverse cohort of students from a wide range of disciplines such as public policy, economics, social sciences, engineering, environmental studies, education, and technology (*any domain with a meaningful connection to health and well-being).
- This diversity enriches the learning experience, encouraging innovative problem-solving and collaboration across sectors.
- The ideal candidate should be passionate about improving health outcomes, addressing inequities, and contributing to sustainable global health solutions, whether through clinical practice, policy development, research, advocacy or innovative technologies.
- By bringing together varied perspectives, the MGHD program aims to prepare leaders who can address complex health delivery challenges in diverse contexts worldwide.
- An interest in interactive, active problem-based learning and proficiency in analytical skills to enable learning of biostatistics, epidemiology, and accounting.
- Proficiency in English that will enable the student to both comprehend learning materials and to engage in verbal and written communication.
- Equivalence Certificate (if applicable), *Those who need to apply for the equivalence certificate should note that you cannot apply for the HEC Equivalence Certificate until you have been admitted to UGHE, as one of the required documents is your admission letter.
- A candidate who already holds a master’s degree is not eligible to apply for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program.
How to apply
- Fill in the online application, which includes an application for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, entering the required personal, academic, demographic information and the required information for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program.
- Upload all supporting documents (Passport, National ID or Refugee ID, academic transcript/s, and degree certificate, two recommendation letters.
Applicants should submit a single, fully completed application. Incomplete submissions or multiple applications will not be considered.

1. Eligibility and Targeted Groups
Who is eligible to apply for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Global Health Equity?
Eligible applicants are academically talented young person’s facing the highest social and economic barriers to opportunity. Applicants must demonstrate leadership potential and a strong commitment to giving back to their communities. Applicants must be Rwandan or African nationals, meet the UGHE admission requirements.
Are those over 35 years of age eligible for the scholarship?
No. The scholarship is currently open to young individuals under 35 at the time of application and have completed an undergraduate degree in any field. However, special consideration is given to individuals with disabilities, as many have experienced educational delays.
What are the target categories for scholarships under the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Global Health Equity?
The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the UGHE targets academically talented and socially disadvantaged young persons, with a focus on women, refugees and displaced youth, and individuals with disabilities. Male applicants are welcome to apply; however, the program prioritizes underrepresented groups to promote equity and inclusivity.
2. Application Process
How can I apply for the scholarship?
What Documents are required?
- Valid Passport for non-Rwandans, National ID for Rwandans, official refugee or asylum documentation.
- Official undergraduate academic transcript and degree certificate.
- Applicants should be eligible to attain the Rwanda Higher Education Council (HEC) Equivalency Certificate (after being enrolled) *Only for those with foreign bachelor’s degrees obtained inside or outside of Rwanda.
- Recommendation letter.
- Resume or CV *A brief CV highlighting your accomplishments as a PDF file.

2. Masters in Health Professions Education (HPE)
Applicants do not need a medical background to apply. Applicants from diverse academic disciplines are encouraged to apply.
4. Selection & Evaluation
How will my application be evaluated?
Applications are reviewed based on:
- Academic excellence and potential
- Leadership and community engagement services
- Should have an interest in global health
- Alignment with the Mastercard Foundation’s Values and Mission
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to a written test and an interview.
Does the University Admission guarantee a scholarship?
No. Admission is a prerequisite, but scholarship awards are highly competitive and based on merit, equity, and available slots.
5. Scholarship Coverage
What does the scholarship cover?
- Tuition and academic fees
- Accommodation and meals on campus
- Study materials
- Health insurance
- Monthly stipend for personal expenses and transport
- Flights and visa support for international students.
Can I defer my scholarship?
Deferral is only considered in extreme medical/health cases with proper documentation; otherwise, no exceptions will be allowed.
6. Scholar Life & Support
Will I have housing at UGHE?
Yes. Scholars and all UGHE Students generally are provided with safe, inclusive, and disability-adapted accommodation on campus.
What if I have a disability?
UGHE provides adjustments upon request, including:
- Accessible dormitories and bathrooms
- Assistive technologies
- Extended time for assessments
- Adapted course resources and supervision
Confidential documentation is required to enable these arrangements.
Will I receive psychosocial and academic support?
Yes. UGHE offers:
- Peer mentorship and faculty advising.
- Academic writing and English bridge courses.
- Mental health counseling (individual and group sessions).
- Safe spaces for women, refugees, and persons with disabilities.
What happens if I struggle academically?
Support systems are in place. You may receive tutoring, peer mentoring, and academic accommodation. One failure does not end your scholarship—UGHE prioritizes growth and resilience.
Will there be special support for women or refugee scholars?
Absolutely. The Mastercard Foundation and UGHE are committed to equity and dignity for all Scholars:
- Mentoring and empowerment sessions
- Refugee scholars will receive support for legal documentation, resettlement advice, psychosocial support, and identity protection
- All Scholars can join identity-based peer circles and benefit from trauma-informed psychosocial support
- Nursing mothers with children under the age of two will receive accommodation.
7. Post-Scholarship Expectations
Am I required to return home after graduation?
Yes. Scholars are expected to return to their home countries or communities to apply their knowledge and skills. This is central to the Mastercard Foundation’s mission of social and economic transformation in Africa.
Will I be connected to alumni?
Yes, faculty alumni and peer mentors will support you. You will also help build the future Scholars Alumni Network.
What are the other available services or opportunities
- Program for mentorship.
- Peering with alumni and adjunct fault will help you gain career advice that will help you position yourself to become a global leader and acquire the skills you need to land a job.
- Following graduation, scholars who will have an entrepreneurial initiative to work on can apply for the Foundation’s entrepreneurship fund.
- Through a writing center, you will be empowered to boost your language and academic writing skills.
