The MSc Global Nursing Leadership aims to produce effective clinical, research, humanitarian, or educational leaders and executives at local, regulatory, administrative, and national or international policy levels. These can improve both the health of populations as well as advance the nursing profession. The MSc in Global Nursing Leadership aims to train nurse leaders who possess a strong global health perspective, along with the essential traits, attitudes, interpersonal competencies, and systems-thinking skills required to: 

  • Influence global health and nursing. 
  • Promote social justice and equity in appropriate nursing care. 
  • Nurture effective networks for nurses. 
  • Demonstrate organizational management and business skills. 
  • Demonstrate professionalism and self-mastery in nursing leadership.  

 Graduates will be prepared to lead innovative nursing solutions and influence policy to address complex societal, global, and professional health challenges following five competencies: 

Business minded organizational manager

Responsibly manage healthcare resources which includes human, financial, and infrastructural resources in a way which promotes organizational growth, sustainability, and safety to end users of nursing. 

Promotor of social justice and health equity

Apply evidence to generate a Nursing course of action to address global health challenges, recommend nursing strategies to strengthen health systems, promote universal coverage, and advance the attainment of equity and Sustainable Development Goals 

Astute leader

Apply evidence-based leadership skills to carry out global nursing leadership functions which include formulating  strategic plans,  networking with interprofessional teams, coaching nursing teams, effectively communicating with or managing stakeholders, delegating duties, role modelling, motivating nursing teams, leading and managing change or adaptation tasks, and supporting innovations which promote global health, nursing education, research, nursing regulation, nursing association, health or nursing policy and nursing practice. 

Creator and user of evidence for decision making

Develop nursing policies based on scientific evidence, sound thought processes and decision making and support the development of priorities in nursing policy research. 

Communicator who inspires interprofessional collaboration and influences global nursing teams

Motivate nurses and the interprofessional healthcare teams to fulfil their duties and mandate to society.

Admissions Criteria

Admissions Criteria
  • Applicants should have completed and successfully graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or Midwifery *Official academic transcript/s and degree certificate should be attached as proof of completion. 
  • Registered Nurse/Midwife or its equivalent and licensed by relevant, recognized Nursing and/or Midwifery Council. 
  • Also considered will be: 
    • A stated interest in interactive, active experiential learning. 
    • A demonstration of values and experience consistent with the philosophy of the University of Global Health Equity. 
    • Proficiency in spoken and written English to enable the student to both comprehend learning material and to engage in verbal and written communication at the graduate level. 
  • Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. 
  • Priority will be given to students who have demonstrated: 
    • Leadership experience, 
    • Strong communication skills in spoken and written English, 
    • Success in learning 
    • Candidates with a minimum of five years’ work experience in a nursing environment. 
  • Candidates must be available to attend all classes (in person and online), small group meetings, field work, and examinations as required. 
Credit Transfer

Due to its small class size and a focus on educational quality and excellence, UGHE will not accept credit transfer from other institutions of higher learning in exchange for course work and satisfactory progress in the MSc Global Nursing Leadership (MGNL) program.

  • Upload all supporting documents (Passport, National ID or Refugee ID, academic transcript/s, and degree certificate, two recommendation letters, Nursing registration and Nursing practising license. 

Applicants should submit a single, fully completed application. Incomplete submissions or multiple applications will not be considered.

These scholarships are granted annually to a select number of incoming students who have: 

  • Demonstrated a strong commitment to equity and advancing nursing leadership and 
  • Excelled throughout the admissions process. 

Please note: these scholarships do not cover flights to and from Rwanda, local travel expenses for non-academic activities, personal expenses, monthly stipend, equivalence application fees, or student visa costs. 

  • Students will be responsible for non-academic transport costs, visa costs, and personal living expenses.  
  • Students will be responsible for their monthly stipend or pocket money. 
Study Materials and Support

Students enrolled will receive: 

  • Access to books, manuals, online tools, and multimedia learning materials at no extra cost. 
  • 24-hour internet access during in person classes in Rwanda, research tools, practicum and research funding support. 
  • Health/medical insurance during in-person classes. 
  • During in-person classes, students are expected to bring their own personal items (e.g., toiletries, stationery, laundry supplies, phone airtime, and grooming expenses).
