Health Professions Education (HPE)
Developing Transformative Educators for Equitable Health Systems in Africa
About the Program
The Health Professions Education (HPE) Program at the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) is a transformative academic initiative developed in direct response to Rwanda’s national human resources for health (HRH) needs. Rooted in equity, excellence, and system relevance, the program aims to elevate the quality, leadership, and sustainability of health professions education both nationally and across the African continent.
Despite a growing demand for skilled healthcare workers, there remains limited availability of competency-based, context-responsive training programs for the educators who prepare them. The HPE Program directly addresses this challenge by equipping academic and clinical faculty, policymakers, and institutional leaders with the skills needed to lead teaching, curriculum reform, faculty development, educational quality assurance, and research.
This program was designed by involving more than 30 national and international stakeholders. It is informed by benchmarking with global leaders in health professions education and adapted to the specific challenges and opportunities in Rwanda and the broader region.

Strategic Vision and the Ripple Effect
The HPE Program is part of UGHE’s broader mission to advance health equity through education. Operating on a strategic "ripple effect" model, UGHE positions itself as the continental epicentre for health education transformation, beginning with training our own faculty, expanding through Rwanda, and scaling across Africa, transforming institutional teaching practices, strengthening academic quality, and shaping health workforce development at a systems level. This program supports a national and continental shift: from individual faculty development to structural and policy-level education reform.
