Health Professions Education (HPE)

Developing Transformative Educators for Equitable Health Systems in Africa

About the HPE Program

The Health Professions Education (HPE) Program at UGHE is a transformative academic initiative designed to respond to Rwanda’s national human resources for health (HRH) needs and the continent-wide demand for qualified health professions educators. Rooted in equity, excellence, and relevance, the program prepares healthcare professionals to become educators, curriculum leaders, faculty developers, quality assurance champions, and educational researchers. It emphasizes workplace integration, policy engagement, and leadership development, positioning graduates to lead reforms at institutional, national, and regional levels.

Why Study HPE at UGHE?

  • Africa’s First Full HPE Pathway: UGHE is the first university in Rwanda and its neighbouring countries to offer a full stepladder HPE curriculum from Certificate to MSc.
  • Career Advancement: Prepare for roles as educators, program directors, deans, clinical faculty, quality assurance experts, and institutional leaders.
  • Community of Practice: Join a growing network of educators across the continent working to transform medical and health professions education.
  • Designed for Working Professionals: Flexible online learning combined with immersive in-person intensive sessions at UGHE’s campus.
  • Expert Faculty & Global Networks: Learn from leading educators at UGHE, and our expert partners from known international institutions.
  • Real-World Impact: Blends academic theory with practical change leadership, QA practice, and institutional reform.
  • Peer Mentorship and Career Growth: Connect with fellow educators, build regional mentorship networks, and gain access to new leadership pathways.
  • Equity and Innovation Embedded: Every module weaves in global health equity, inclusive education, and digital innovation.
  • MCFSP Scholarships Available: Eligible students may qualify for Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program (Link).

Structure of the Program

The primary structure of the programs is the stepladder curriculum development model. This model frames the three programs as interconnected yet independently self-contained. The model is progressive, with each level building on the previous one to create a cohesive and comprehensive curriculum that addresses the evolving needs of HPE. This structured approach allows for the progressive development of the programs and ensures a coherent and integrated learning experience. The structure allows students to advance through increasingly complex educational levels by building on their past knowledge and experience. This model offers flexibility, allowing learners to exit at any level with a recognized qualification or continue with a higher program in the HPE hierarchy.

Flexible Progression and Exit Pathways

UGHE’s HPE Program follows a STEPWISE model that enables learners to either complete each level as a standalone qualification or continue to the next level based on performance and career goals.
