The Global Health Delivery Leadership Program (GHDLP)

Global Health Delivery Leadership Program (GHDLP)

Overview

Developed in collaboration with the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, the Global Health Delivery Leadership (GHDLP) is an intensive six-month program, including two-week residency in Rwanda, five to six months of distance coaching while in their respective countries; and three day presentation and graduation which take place from Rwanda at the end of the program. This program targets public health leaders and technical experts from Ministries of Health and non-governmental and civil society organizations. The program develops fundamental management and leadership skills through an active field approach based on case studies. During the GHDLP, participants explore real-world healthcare challenges and innovative solutions to address them. The program provides leaders with skills to develop value-based health programs in their own context.

At the end of the intensive two-week training, teams leave with ideas (breakthrough projects) to address specific challenges in health care delivery. Expert coaches are assigned to guide them throughout the implementation and evaluation of these projects. After six months of implementation, participants reconvene in Kigali to present the progress on their projects, share lessons learned, and design the sustainability strategy for their projects.

Program Objectives

  • To develop leadership and program management skills in those responsible for implementing actions supported by the Global Fund in priority countries
  • To provide leaders with tools and skills to innovate in health care services
  • To discuss strategies and tools to enhance countries’ ability to receive and effectively manage grants. We believe that this program prepares leaders to play an active role in addressing the burden of diseases in their respective countries.

The GHDLP Uniquenes

GHDLP offers a one-of-a-kind opportunity for public health leaders to deepen their expertise, develop innovative solutions, and drive sustainable health improvements in some of the world’s most vulnerable regions – specifically in Africa. Its field-driven, case-based approach, coupled with expert coaching and practical project implementation, ensures that participants leave

equipped with the tools and knowledge to make a real, lasting impact on global health. The combination of a two-week residency in Rwanda and five to six months of distance coaching, allows participants to apply leadership skills in real-world settings with the support of expert coaches. Briefly, the GHDLP’s uniqueness lie into these key aspects:

  • The program is tailored for global health leaders leading health systems in the resource constrained settings
  • It uses the blended mode of course delivery
  • Its sessions follow the field based and case-study driven approach
  • It provides the opportunity and guidance for leaders to design breakthrough projects and implement them with expert coaching and mentorship.
  • The program has innovation, sustainability, and real-world impact to its center
  • The program offers an opportunity for an alumni network/community of practice for best practices and experience sharing

Our Leadership/Pedagogical Framework

The leadership/pedagogical training approach for the Global Health Delivery Leadership Program (GHDLP) is an integrated, action-oriented pedagogical model that emphasizes practical, real-world learning, adaptive leadership, and sustainable impact. The model is designed to address the complex, dynamic nature of global health challenges, equipping leaders with the necessary tools, skills, and mindset to lead effectively in low-resource settings.

Practically, the GHDLP’s leadership training model is grounded in an action-oriented, systems-thinking approach, designed to equip leaders with the skills, strategies, and mindset required to address complex health challenges in low-resource environments of Africa. By combining practical field experience, peer learning, transformational leadership development, and expert coaching, the program ensures that participants are not only prepared to lead today but are also positioned to drive lasting, scalable impact in the future.

“The GHDLP training provided us with technical tools, such as the strategic problem- solving approach. It enabled us to develop an innovative project and helped us improve our performance indicators on the field.”
“As a result of what we learned under GHDLP, for the very first time in our HIV response, we were able to engage stakeholders and partners effectively and contribute to the development of a strategic objective focused on gender-based violence prevention as a key component of HIV prevention.”
“I am so grateful to my institution for participating in this Cohort 7. The atmosphere created by fellow participants made it feel as though we had known each other for years. This was made possible with the excellent coordination of the UGHE faculty.”
“As GHDLP participants, we have been challenged about issues around health insurance, particularly to those who are in need, and we need to find ways in which we can apply the shared health financing models in our countries. With successful, committed, and consistent leadership, we can build excellent and effective healthcare systems”
