Scholarships and Financial Support at UGHE

UGHE is firmly committed to reducing the financial barriers to higher education by providing equity-driven payment plans and a variety of scholarship opportunities. 

To ensure that every qualified student can access a world-class education, UGHE offers several scholarships recognizing academic excellence, financial need, and a strong commitment to diversity, from the following options: 

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program
UGHE Named Scholarships

UGHE Named Scholarships provide full tuition coverage for the entire duration of the MGHD program. These scholarships are granted annually to a select number of incoming students who have: 

  • Demonstrated a strong commitment to equity and advancing global health delivery and 
  • Excelled throughout the admissions process. 

Please note: these scholarships do not cover flights to and from Rwanda, local travel expenses for non-academic activities, personal expenses, monthly stipend, equivalence application fees, or student visa costs. 

  • Students will be responsible for non-academic transport costs, visa costs, and personal living expenses.  
  • Students will be responsible for their monthly stipend or pocket money. 

Please note: this scholarship does not cover flights to and from Rwanda, local travel expenses for non-academic activities, personal expenses, monthly stipend, equivalence application fees, or student visa costs. 

UGHE’s Need-Based Scholarship

Candidates not eligible for UGHE’s FULL scholarships may be considered for a need-based scholarship upon admission to the MGHD program. 

  • Financial need is assessed individually, following a full review of each student’s financial capacity. 
  • All admitted students will be required to pay a mandatory enrollment fee that includes both an initial deposit and a technology/e-learning resources fee soon after admission.  
  • Once a student accepts a need-based scholarship they will receive a tuition contract from the Finance Department, outlining available payment plan options.  
    • Tuition balances may be settled through manageable installments, Students may extend payments up to one year beyond program completion. Please note: academic transcripts and diplomas will be withheld until all tuition fees are paid in full. 
  • Students will be responsible for non-academic transportation, visa costs, and personal living expenses.  
  • Students will be responsible for their monthly stipend or pocket money.

Study Materials and Support
  • Students enrolled in the following MGHD options: Global Surgery, Health Management, One Health, and Social and Community Medicine will receive: 
      • A laptop for the duration of their studies, preloaded with all required software. 
      • Access to books, manuals, online tools, and multimedia learning materials at no extra cost. 
      • 24-hour internet access during in person classes in Rwanda, research tools, practicum and research funding support. 
      • Health/medical insurance when in-person classes begin. 
      • However, students are expected to bring their own personal items (e.g., toiletries, stationery, laundry supplies, phone airtime, and grooming expenses). 
  • Gender, Sexual and Reproductive Health option
      • Students sponsored through the COMS-A scholarship will take the program online and have their tuition and research/practicum costs covered, while they are responsible for other costs, including health insurance, laptop, and travel.
      • Students under needs-based or UGHE scholarships are responsible for:
        • Their own health insurance,
        • Purchasing a laptop (UGHE will provide all required educational software),
        • Covering research and practicum costs, including data collection, analysis, writing, defense, and publication and
        • All academic materials, books, manuals, online resources, and multimedia content will be provided at no additional cost.
        • Managing their own monthly stipend.
