About Us

The Leon Inkling Club (LIC)
The Leon Inkling Club (LIC), formerly known as the UGHE Journal and Writing Club, was founded on August 10th, 2023, by students Samuel Baker Ishimwe and Bertrand Dushimumuremyi under the guidance of Dr. Denis Regnier and the UGHE Writing Centre. The club was born from a shared passion for writing and critical thought, inspired by interdisciplinary courses such as Social Medicine, Medical Anthropology, African History, and Political Economy, as well as Critical Thinking. These academic experiences revealed that writing is not only a communication tool but also a powerful instrument for reflection, advocacy, and change.
The name Leon Inkling Club reflects both identity and aspiration. “Leo,” the Latin word for lion, honors UGHE’s Lion identity, while “Inkling” draws inspiration from historic literary circles that shaped great writers. As a club, we aim to cultivate creativity, integrity, persistence, consistency, and teamwork among students who seek to use writing as a tool for change.
The Magazine Initiative
The club oversees and strengthens the student magazine initiative, which evolved from earlier newsletter efforts that began with the first MBBS cohort. While student publications existed before, there was limited structural continuity in design, authorship tracking, and editorial development. LIC was therefore established not only to nurture writers but also to institutionalize a more professional, consistent, and sustainable publication process.
The magazine serves as a platform for student voices, academic reflections, creative writing, opinion pieces, poetry, and social commentary. It is published quarterly (every three months), aligning with the club’s commitment to sustained engagement and quality output. Beyond publication, the club organizes writing workshops, peer-review sessions, and creative reading events to continuously sharpen members’ skills.
Our Aspiration
At its core, LIC believes in Using Writing as a Tool for Change. We aspire to:
  • Empower both experienced and emerging writers.
  • Strengthen the student newsletter as an intellectual and creative archive.
  • Foster a culture of thoughtful expression within the UGHE community.
  • Ensure that student narratives are documented with professionalism and pride.
