Hosted by the Center for Gender Equity, this webinar on Leadership in Mentorship Programs will comprise the third virtual session of UGHE’s Mentorship Program series, uniting leaders and learners to build capacity and confidence in the next generation to become changemakers for the future.

Drawing on their extensive experience, panelists will discuss and explore the qualities mentees need to become the leaders they want to be – both personally, and professionally. Moderated by Center for Gender Equity Chair, Tsion Yohannes Waka, each panelist will share lessons, recommendations and stories from their own career trajectories, and provide the needed resources with which to build this skill-set in mentees.

Tsion Yohannes Waka

Tsion Yohannes Waka joins the UGHE team as a faculty and the Chair of the Center for Gender Equity in February 2020. Tsion is responsible for mainstreaming gender in the academic, research, and community development projects of UGHE. Before this role, Tsion was engaged with UGHE as the chief organizer for Women Leaders in Global Health Conference of 2019. Prior to joining University of Global Health Equity in Rwanda, Tsion was engaged in production of a Preliminary Gender Profile of Ethiopia and a National Assessment on Accessibility and Availability of Rehabilitative and Reintegration Services for Survivors of Violence for UN Women Ethiopia, among various researches.  She has also been working for 16 years as a gender expert and consultant with a number of international and local non-governmental and government organizations through participating in community engagement projects, conducting researches, evaluations, gender analysis, audit and impact assessments in relation to various thematic areas such as reproductive health, child rights and other development issues. Her roles also included giving trainings on gender-based violence, gender equality and gender mainstreaming to schools, university students, community members and technical staff in international and local NGOs. Some of the organizations she has previously worked with include Addis Ababa University, World Bank, UNWomen Ethiopia, Fredrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), Women in Self-Employment (WISE), Deutscher Entwicklungsdienst (DED), Menschen Fuer Menschen, Mary Joy Aid Through Development, USAID- ATEP, Oxfam Canada and Novib, British Council etc.

Prof. Agnes Binagwaho, MD, M(Ped), PHD

Vice Chancellor, UGHE

Professor Agnes Binagwaho is a Rwandan pediatrician who returned to Rwanda in July of 1996, two years after the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi. Since then, she has provided clinical care in the public sector, served the Rwandan Health Sector (2001-2016) in high-level government positions, first as the Executive Secretary of Rwanda’s National AIDS Control Commission, then as Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, and 5 years as Minister of Health. She co-founded the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE), an initiative of Partners In Health, which focuses on changing how health care is delivered around the world by training global health professionals who strive to deliver more equitable, quality health services for all. Professor Binagwaho currently resides in Rwanda and is the Vice -Chancellor of the University of Global Health Equity. She is specialized in emergency pediatrics, neonatology, and the treatment of HIV/AIDS. She completed her MD at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles and her MA in Pediatrics at the Universite de Bretagne Occidentale. She was also awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science from Dartmouth College and earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Rwanda College of Medicine. Professor Binagwaho currently serves as a Senior Advisor to the Director General of the World Health Organization, and as a member of multiple Advisory Board and Board of Directors including the Rockefeller Foundation Board. She is a member of a number of international working groups and task forces in global health for the United Nations and independent organizations and also sits on the Editorial Board of several scientific journals and serves on multiple scientific commissions. Previously, she co-chaired the Millennium Development Goal Project Task Force on HIV/AIDS and Access to Essential Medicines for the Secretary-General of the United Nations under the leadership of Professor Jeffrey Sachs (MGGs). Professor Binagwaho also co-chaired the Joint Learning Initiative on Children and HIV/AIDS (JLICA) (2006–09) and founded the Rwandan Pediatric Society, chairing it until 2019. Since 2016, she has been a member of the American National Academy of Medicine and since 2017 a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences. In 2015, Professor Binagwaho received the annual Roux Prize and Ronald McDonald House Charities Award of Excellence. She is currently a senior Lecturer in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School, a Professor of Pediatrics at UGHE, as well as an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine. Professor Binagwaho’s academic engagements include research in implementation sciences, research on human rights to health, health services delivery systems strengthening, HIV/AIDS, and pediatric care. She has published over 190 peer- reviewed articles and has recently been nominated in Avance Media’s 2020 100 Most Influential Women in Africa List.

Dr. Joannie Marlene Bewa

Family Medicine physician & Research Associate, University of South Florida College of Public Health

Dr. Joannie Marlene Bewa is an influential global health expert from Benin, multi-award-winning family medicine physician and researcher (sexual, reproductive health and cancer) at the University of South Florida College of Public Health (USA). She is the interim Board Chair of Women in Global Health, a movement with 24 chapters, more than 23 000 supporters in more than 90 countries. She has a decade of experience in healthcare, technical consultancy, advocacy and research in the US and Africa. She serves as an advisory Board Member for Merck for Mothers, a 500 USD million commitment to improve maternal health worldwide as well as appointed to serve in the independent panel advising the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie about its 2 million euros fund for women: La Francophonie avec Elles. She is a founding member of the Partnership for Maternal NewBorn and Child Health Adolescent and Youth Constituency and the Chair of the African Women Leaders Young Women Caucus, a joint UN Women and Africa Union. She founded the Young Beninese Leaders Association in 2010 in Benin Republic, which reached over 20 000 adolescents and youth on sexual and reproductive health, HIV prevention and leadership and was  awarded the very competitive First lady Michelle Obama Young African Women Leaders Grant. She has been appointed by the UN Youth Envoy as UN SDG Young Leader. Her global impact was acknowledged by governments, bilateral and multilateral institutions including the United Nations, the Governments of Canada and Benin, the African Union, ONE Campaign, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Goalkeepers, the U.S State Department and the Secretary Clinton Women in Public Service Project.

Ahadu Gebreamlak

Managing Director, Center for African Leadership Development

Ahadu Gebreamlak has 20 years’ experience as a Managing Director, country representative of a US Consulting firm, the African Knowledge Transfer Partnership (AKTP) Advisor for the British Council, a leadership development consultant, a learning facilitator / trainer, and organizational development, and a legal and business consultant to more than a hundred organizations. He holds an MA in Organizational Leadership from Eastern University, USA, and an LLB from Addis Ababa University Law School. His professional certifications include a Business Management System (BMS) from International Trade Center (ITC), Export Management from CBI Netherlands, Coaching (Foundational Level Accreditation) from European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC), TOT on Leadership Essentials from Center for Creative Leadership (CCL), Consulting Skills from Management Sciences for Health (MSH), and many others. He has engaged in consulting assignments with over a hundred organizations including The World Bank, International Trade Center (ITC), USAID, The British Council, Management Sciences for Health (MSH), CBI – Netherlands, Institute of International Education (IIE), the British Council, Pact Ethiopia, Fredrick Ebert Stiftung, International Rescue Committee (IRC), John Snow Incorporated (JSI), Packard Foundation/IFHP, Institute for Security Studies(ISS), and GIZ.

Nathalie Munyampenda,

Chief Executive Officer, Kepler

Nathalie is passionate about education and the future of work. Without new pathways in education that provide foundational 21st century skills, meet students where they are (equity) and lead to clear employment outcomes, African countries will lag behind in terms of the future of work. Since June 2020, Nathalie is Chief Executive Officer at Kepler. Kepler is building a global model of accessible and excellent higher education. By innovating the university experience, Kepler graduates distinguished learners and cultivate leaders who transform their lives, their communities, and their countries. Over 90% of graduates are employed within 6 months of graduation. Prior to Kepler, Nathalie was Managing Director at the Next Einstein Forum building Africa’s community of scientists, curating the premier science and innovation conference and pushing for science driven industrialization through foresight and policy work. Nathalie has also worked in the Canadian public service and international social media consulting before working to build the Government of Rwanda’s central communication unit as Coordinator (DG) in the Office of the Government Spokesperson.

Dr. Melany Rabideau

Assistant Professor, UGHE

Melany Rabideau serves as an Assistant Professor supporting the Evidence Based Global Health Delivery program. Having led in vast healthcare delivery roles, Melany’s professional background specializes in practice transformation by reversing underperforming operations through process improvement, fiscal stewardship, and focus on patient-provider relationships. Through partnerships with physician and executive leaders, she builds results-driven teams to accomplish strategic priorities. As a proven systems thinker, Melany subscribes to an equity agenda designing for quality across the continuum of health services with an emphasis on primary care delivered at a local level. Melany has her Doctorate in Organizational Leadership from Hood College located in Frederick, Maryland. She completed her qualitative dissertation exploring the lived experiences of emerging adult women and studied their perceived value of primary care and the patient-provider relationship. Melany also has a Masters of Public Health in Policy and a Bachelors of Science in Public Health Science both from the University of Maryland, College Park. Melany is a lean six sigma black belt and received Penn Business Journal’s Future of Healthcare award. As a member of the Society of Women Geographers, Melany finds fulfillment in sustainable travel and spending time in nature.
