Health care delivery is complex and context dependent and requires an interdisciplinary effort focused on value. Regardless where you work, what programs you are doing, or creating your own entrepreneur venture, the combination of practical and effective management and leadership skills is essential to generate high value programs.
UGHE is pleased to offer an option in Health Management within its Master of Science of Global Health Delivery program.
In Health Management, students will learn the key strategy and management practices in global health programs. It is designed to train global health professionals how to apply evidence-based and field-tested managerial functions to manage complex programs and organizations. Students will learn from using data and evidence to identify project areas, using management tools in developing a health program, securing funding, to managing different aspects of the execution of program, through active learning methodologies.
Students in Health Management option will learn the driving forces behind a high value health organization, the methodology in developing strategic plan, business plan, market analysis, budget, grant proposal; pitching ideas to potential funders; managing human, finance, and supply resources; and the basics in project management.
Program Modules:
In addition to all the core courses in the MGHD program, students taking Health management option will also take the following modules and a practicum project:
① Strategic Planning in Global Health Organizations (5 credits)
The module will look at health care value, the factors contributing to high value health organizations, and the process of strategic plan.
② Data-driven Global Health Program (10 credits)
The module is a practical hands-on session. Student will learn and practice how to generate program ideas through searching for and analyzing evidence. At the end of this module, each student group will generate an area/idea of a health project.
③ Global Health Program Development (20 credits)
Based on the project idea generated in the second Module, the groups will continue to develop the project idea into grant proposals. The course will incorporate some commonly used business management tools and apply them to non-profit health program development. Topics include but not limited to market analysis, marketing strategy, stakeholder analysis, budgeting, finance projection, grant writing and pitching. Each group will develop their idea to a full grant proposal. Students will “pitch” their projects as part of their final assignments.
④ Global Health Program Management (10 credits)
This module focuses on the key areas in the management of the operation of an organization, include human resources, finance, supply chain, governance and ethics.
⑤ Project Management Fundamentals (5 credits)
The final module of Health Management will introduce the skills and tools in the basic project management. Project management is a widely sort after skill that applies to all kinds of project implementation. Students will base on real cases of health programs to develop their project management skills, that will be applicable in their future career.
⑥ CAPSTONE: Health Management Practicum project (50 credits)
The practicum project provides students with a guided space in which to carry out a self-directed and independent project in a field related to health management. It is designed to allow students to gain hands on experience in the research and design, implementation and management, and analysis and dissemination of their project, which will further prepare them for becoming global health leaders and change makers. The practicum in Health Management can take on any forms of health project with a partnering organization. Projects that encourage students to think critically, to utilize evidence to solve challenging problems strategically, and apply management skills to address complex operational challenges equitably, effectively, and efficiently are suitable for Health Management Practicum.
