Lifebox - UGHE Joint Safe Surgery and Anesthesia

Fellowship Opportunity

UGHE and Lifebox share a common vision for improving the quality and safety in surgical and anesthesia care through building the skills of healthcare professionals. 

UGHE is a new university based in Rwanda that is developing the next generation of global health professionals into leaders and change-makers who strive to deliver more equitable, quality health services for all. UGHE is reimagining health education to ensure that quality healthcare reaches every individual in every corner of the globe. 

Lifebox is a global nonprofit organization registered in Ethiopia, United Kingdom and the United States that seeks to improve the safety of surgery and anesthesia provision in low and middle-income countries around the world to address core areas of surgical patient safety; teamwork, surgical infections, and anesthesia safety. 

The two organizations are seeking to recruit a full-time Safe Surgery and Anesthesia Fellow who should be an exceptional Rwandan individual in anesthesia or surgery. The Fellowship is for a period of one to two years and fellows are engaged in a full-time capacity. 

The objectives of the Fellows Program are to: 

1) Contribute to measurable improvement in the safety of surgery and anesthesia in Rwanda and beyond; 

2) Work with local clinicians, health ministries, fellow residents and trainees, and multi-disciplinary teams to develop and implement locally-initiated, adapted, and effective surgical quality improvement initiatives; 

3) Undertake rigorous original research to drive and advocate for safer surgery and anesthesia locally and globally; 

4) Develop skills and expertise in fellows as future leaders in the implementation of quality improvement programs in surgery and anesthesia. 

The Fellowship offers:

Eligibility and requirements:

The Lifebox-UGHE Safe Surgery Fellowship program is open to current trainees or residents in anesthesia and all surgical subspecialties. It is dedicated to Rwandan applicants, who are currently residing and training in Rwanda. The fellowship requires a full-time commitment.

Applicants must demonstrate: 

  • Demonstrable interest in and commitment to global surgery and anesthesia; 
  • Ability to communicate in spoken English with a high degree of fluency; additional language skills in Kinyarwanda and French are desirable, but not essential; 
  • Strong communication skills; 
  • Honesty, integrity and dedication to equitable access to surgical care
