Professor Abebe Bekele, Dean of the School of Medicine at UGHE - Rwanda is admitted into the Academy of Master Surgeon Educators®

Professor Abebe Bekele, MD, FCS (ECSA), FCS, Dean of the School of Medicine is inducted into membership in the Academy of Master Surgeon Educators® at the American College of Surgeons (ACS) on September 30, 2022, during an event in Chicago.

Professor Abebe was inducted to this highly coveted and prestigious Academy in recognition of his service, leadership, and contribution to surgical education in Africa, most notably in Ethiopia, Rwanda and at the College of Surgeons of East Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA).

He is a Full Professor of Surgery and has full professor faculty positions at the Addis Ababa University and the University of Rwanda. He has vast experience in surgical education and has served as educator, visiting professor, and external examiner in undergraduate and post graduate education in Ethiopia, Africa, Europe and North America.

Professor Abebe is the Chairman of the Examinations and Credentials Committee at the College of Surgeons of East Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA) and is the Editor-in Chief of the East and Central Africa Journal of Surgery. He is a member of the editorial board of the JAMA health forum and the Ethiopian Medical Journal. He has published more than 100 research articles and book chapters in prestigious journals and is a recipient of several regional and international awards and recognitions.

Professor Abebe is a certified General surgeon and Thoracic surgeon, and has received several fellowships including Medical Education from the FAIMER institute in Philadelphia, in Simulation Based Surgical Education from the University of Washington and in Surgical Leadership from the Harvard Medical School. He has also received recognition and awards from the Society of Vascular Surgery (SVS) and the American College of Surgery.

He has served as CEO of the Black Lion teaching Hospital and Dean of the School of Medicine of Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia. He also serves as a member of the advisory council to the Ethiopian Ministry of Sciences and Higher Education.
