We are welcoming submissions for the University of Global Health Equity, Center for Equity in Global Surgery (CEGS), Rwanda GlobalSurgBox competition. And yes, you can win $100!

The GlobalSurgBox is a portable, adaptable, and affordable surgical trainer that can be used by trainees of all levels. It is a surgical simulator that is affordable, highly adaptable, and inspired by a commitment to equity in global surgery. Creators of the GlobalSurgBox and the UGHE Center for Equity in Global Surgery are looking to see locally sourced, future iterations of this tool based on local needs and resource availability.

We are striving to create a low-cost and readily available version of the GlobalSurgBox. A sample GlobalSurgBox is shown at This video, shows the content we seek to improvise and source locally. Can you innovate replacements to the commonly used resources in the box such as yoga mats, pipe cleaners, alligator clips, sponges? Are these materials available locally for less than say 20,000 RWF? Can you assemble this surgical practice box in Rwanda?

Below is a table that you should fill out detailing the cost of each locally available item/replacement, and the place in Rwanda where it can be obtained. Applications are now open and will close on the 4th of February, 2022, with winners of the $100 prize being announced on 8th February 2022 at the official launch of the CEGS.
