ADDRESSING GLOBAL HEALTH INEQUITIES THROUGH RESEARCH

Prof. Agnes Binagwaho, MD, M(Ped), PhD

Exemplar

The Exemplars in Global Health project aims to identify lessons from countries’ successes in global health to inform the decision-making of leaders, policymakers and funders. The University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) partnered with Gates Ventures (GV) between 2018 and 2020 to understand how seven Exemplar countries – Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Nepal, Peru, Rwanda, Senegal and Cambodia– outperformed their regional and economic peers in reducing under-5 mortality (U5M) during the period 2000-2015, focusing on the implementation of Evidence Based Interventions (EBI) known to reduce amenable U5M. During this work, implementation science frameworks and a mixed method approach were used to understand the exemplar countries’ success in reducing U5M including the decision-making of leaders, policymakers and funders, the EBIs and the strategies they selected as well as the key contextual factors which facilitated or hindered their progress. Details of our previous work can be found here.

The principal investigators of the project, Prof Agnes Binagwaho and Prof Lisa R Hirschhorn, have led the overall design, direction, and engagement with in-country partners, as well as the administrative and logistical support. The project is funded by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Gates Ventures.
